A heavy downpour occurred in the waning seconds of Shenango’s game against South Side Beaver.

Quickly, Frank Bongivengo Field became drenched. At the final buzzer, the players and coaches made a mad dash for the locker room and fans scurried for cover.

However, the Rams must have already felt swamped as the Wildcats’ defense limited South Side’s attack in a 23-8 win in a WPIAL Class A Big Seven Conference battle at Glenn “Pop” Johnston Stadium.

Shenango (4-1 conference, 4-2 overall) contained the Rams’ rushing attack, specifically senior running back Nathan Block. He entered the game as the WPIAL’s second-leading rusher with 978 yards. The ’Cats limited him to 17 yards on nine carries through three quarters. He found some real estate in the fourth quarter and finished the night with 89 yards on 16 totes.

“Our defense showed signs of coming together last week against Union. Tonight, they played outstanding,” Shenango coach Mike Commesso said. “I am so proud of our defense. They held (Block) to basically nothing through three quarters. He got some yards at the end. But, when it counted, we held him in check and I can’t say enough about our defense. It was a great game plan and executed well. They deserve a lot of credit.”

Shenango’s defense was around Block all evening. He had to fight his way through multiple blue shirts for any positive yardage.

“We just read our keys and did what we were supposed to do and stepped up,” Shenango junior Jason Wallace said.

The hosts were constantly in the backfield and caused havoc.

“All week, we just practiced all their draws and everything. We got everything down pat,” Shenango junior Hunter Waskin said. “Our defensive linemen and our linebackers are quick. They get in those holes and get into the backfield. Our team couldn’t be any better right now. I am proud to be part of it.”

In addition, the victory locked up a WPIAL playoff berth for the ’Cats for the first time since 2006.

“We want to keep it going as much as we can and push forward as far as possible,” Wallace said.

With their defense fending off the Rams, the ’Cats went to work in the first half. They scored first on Waskin’s 10-yard run early in the second quarter. Shenango had a chance to add to its lead late in the frame. However, Dylan Kleckner’s 27-yard field goal try was blocked as time expired.

Special teams sparked the hosts in the third quarter. South Side attempted a fake punt, but Waskin stepped in front of Block’s pass. The ’Cats seized the momentum and scored quickly after that for a 14-0 lead.

Just 1:02 later, a bad snap into the end zone gave the hosts two more points on a safety and a 16-0 edge. They converted on their drive following the free kick, too. Brett Hoover crashed in from the 3 to make it a 23-0 game with 21.7 seconds to go in the third.

The Rams broke the shutout in the fourth quarter. Block’s 33-yard run helped set up his short TD run. A 2-point conversion made it 23-8 halfway through the frame.

Behind linemen Mark Fobes, Steve Murcko, Kurtis Schotsch, Matt Duckworth and Dom Westbay, Shenango racked up 267 yards on the ground. Wallace led the way with 118 yards, while Waskin finished with 80.

“Our line did a great job tonight,” Wallace said. “They opened up the holes and we executed and got through them. It was mostly the line, though, we give thanks to them.”
