Neshannock (34) vs. Serra Catholic (14)
Written: Sep 11, 2010
Neshannock improved to 2-0 for the first time in more than 15 years as the Lancers cruised past Serra Catholic, 34-14.
Neshannock continued to rely on its power running game, racking up 291 yards on the ground. Erik Welker led the way with 92 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Asa Davies, coming off a four-touchdown effort, added two more TDs as he ran for 42 yards on six carries. Leo Pasquarello added 73 yards and a TD on 10 carries, and Kienan Owens rushed for 56 yards on two carries.
Lancers coach Pat Cuba said he’s known for a while that his team has plenty of weapons in the backfield.
“We kind of figured that out after we got to camp,” he said. “It’s the best number of backs we’ve had since I’ve been here. And they’re all quality players and very unselfish, which is big because we want everyone to get an opportunity.”
Welker started the scoring with a 54-yard TD run in the first quarter. The Lancers (2-0) broke the game open in the second quarter, scoring 20 unanswered points. Alex Welker caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Michael Sanfilippo, who went 4-of-5 for 49 yards. Davies then tacked on six more points with a 15-yard scamper, and he put the Lancers up 27-0 with a 64-yard punt return.
The win means more than just breaking a long streak to Cuba. “The big thing is getting these guys some confidence,” he said. “Now they believe they can play, we just have to keep it that way. We still have a long way to go.”
Serra Catholic (0-2) got its points came from quarterback Joe Jurofcik, who scored on runs of 45 and 7 yards.
