Another tough one for ’Canes

Written: Sep 30, 2008 at 6:52 AM

In the past two weeks, New Castle has knocked two teams from the unbeaten ranks — Hopewell and West Allegheny. Add in a loss to Blackhawk and that makes three-straight weeks the Red Hurricane has gone up against an unbeaten and top-five ranked foe in WPIAL Class AAA. New Castle faces another tough test Friday night when it welcomes Montour in another brutal Parkway Conference clash. However, Ne-Ca-Hi does have one thing going for it — the Spartans (2-0 conference, 4-1 overall) already have a loss, a 20-12 setback to Highlands in Week 2. “It never gets any easier in the Parkway,” New Castle coach Frank Bongivengo Jr. said. “ We started off with Blackhawk and they were undefeated. Hopewell was undefeated when we played them. West Allegheny was and Montour has only one loss. This Parkway Conference is a grinder. As far as I am concerned, this is the best triple-A conference in the state year in and year out.”

Legendary coaches attend Shenango game

Written: Sep 29, 2008 at 7:20 AM
Though it was Shenango’s homecoming on Saturday, there were a couple of familiar faces on hand for both the Wildcats and the Golden Beavers. Legendary former head coaches Frank Bongivengo Sr. of Shenango and Rich Niedbala of Western Beaver — for whom current ’Cats head coach Ryan Mayo played — served as honorary captains for the opening coin toss. “I almost turned around when I got here,” Niedbala cracked during a visit to the press box, “because I didn’t want to lose another one to Frank.” As far as his first coaching effort against his alma mater went, “It was a little surreal,” Mayo noted. “I’m used to going to battle with those guys, and those kids. I coached those kids for four or five years.” Western Beaver won the matchup 33-6. “I wish the result was a little different, but it is what it is,” Mayo said.

Written: Sep 23, 2008 at 5:51 PM
Don't look now, but we're halfway through the conference season and Mohawk is a game up on Aliquippa in the Class AA Midwestern Conference standings. The Warriors are 3-1 in league play and the Quips are 1-2 after Beaver handed Aliquippa its second consecutive loss, 21-14, on Friday. It's the first time the Quips have lost two in a row since 2001 when they were defeated by Beaver Falls and New Brighton.

KAYLEEN CUBBAL — Hot Ticket Matchup: Laurel over Neshannock. This one could definitely go either way, especially with the Lancers celebrating the opening of a refurbished stadium. Ten members of Neshannock High School’s first varsity football squad will be special guests at Friday’s home opener. They will be honored during a special ceremony at 7 p.m., 30 minutes prior to the kickoff of the Laurel-Neshannock game — the first to be played on the school’s new field turf. Bob Leonard, Dick Davis, Jay Sherman, Roger McClay, Frank McClay, Jack Patterson, John Turco, Bernie Hanlon, John Loney and Bill Mack will serve as honorary captains for the game and participate in the coin toss. The former players and their families will attend a pre-game reception at 5:45 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Neshannock played its first varsity game Sept. 13, 1958, against Mohawk, which was in its first season after consolidation of several schools.

Rough stuff for Neshannock, Shenango

Written: Sep 15, 2008 at 6:21 AM
As might be expected of backyard rivals, Neshannock and Shenango played a physical came en route to the Lancers’ 32-13 WPIAL Class A Big Seven Conference win Saturday. Several times, though, the rough stuff exceeded the limits of the agreed-upon rules. Shenango was flagged twice for personal fouls and once for unsportsmanlike conduct, all during the stretch of a few minutes in the second quarter. Neshannock, meanwhile, was hit with three personal foul calls. “It was crazy,” Neshannock head coach Pat Cuba said, “but I really don’t want to say anything about it.” Shenango head coach Ryan Mayo was somewhat more verbose. “That stuff is totally unacceptable,” he said. “I know this is a big rivalry for both teams, and the kids really get into it, but they let their emotions get the best of them.”

WPIAL won’t discipline Union for fight

Written: Sep 12, 2008 at 7:32 AM
The WPIAL has decided not to discipline either Union High or Wilkinsburg players for their roles in a fight during last Friday night’s game. On Wednesday, Union athletic director Bob Natale Sr. delivered a videotape of the game to the WPIAL offices in Green Tree. Upon reviewing the tape, the WPIAL decided neither team nor any players would be penalized for involvement in the incident. The contest between the two Class A football teams ended a 21-0 Union win with 4:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. Wilkinsburg fans and students jumped the fence surrounding Graham Field and ran onto the playing surface after a scuffle between Union and Wilkinsburg players escalated as the Tigers’ entire bench cleared. Players on Union’s bench did not leave the sideline.

Union awaits WPIAL decision on fight

Written: Sep 10, 2008 at 7:04 AM
The WPIAL has yet to make a decision concerning any possible suspensions or punishments against either Union or Wilkinsburg. The two Class A football teams were involved in an on-field altercation that ended a 21-0 Union win with 4:12 remaining in the fourth quarter Friday night. Wilkinsburg fans and students jumped the fence surrounding Graham Field and ran onto the playing surface after a scuffle between Union and Wilkinsburg players escalated to where the Tigers’ entire bench cleared. The Scotties’ bench did not leave the sideline. Wilkinsburg police were on duty and backup was requested to help disperse the crowd and escort Union out of the area. According to Union athletic director Bob Natale Sr., he as well as Wilkinsburg athletic director Cliff Simon and the officials from the game have sent the WPIAL evaluations on what transpired. Natale also will deliver a videotape of the game to the WPIAL offices in Green Tree today. According to WPIAL executive director Tim O’Malley, the WPIAL “will wait until we see a copy of the tape to assess the situation.” Attempts to reach Simon, who also is Wilkinsburg’s coach, were unsuccessful.

Union’s Burkes should be ready for Rochester

Written: Sep 10, 2008 at 7:03 AM
Jason Burkes expects to be healthy and ready for the Scotties’ Friday night affair with Big Seven Conference foe Rochester. Burkes, Union’s star running back, rolled his ankle during the Scotties’ 21-0 nonconference win at Wilkinsburg. Burkes ran for 38 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries against the Tigers, and the majority of his totes came in the first half. “I did it toward the end of the first half,” Burkes said. “It’s nothing of any concern.”

Abramski, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, was able to see and talk with longtime friend Frank Bongivengo Sr. He was surrounded by his family during the game. Abramski’s daughters, Marian and Pat as well as his son Chuck, were in attendance with their spouses and children. His other daughter, Carolyn Abramski Vondrick, lives in Daytona Beach, Fla., and followed the game on the Internet. “As far as my sister (Pat Abramski Rumbaugh) and brother (Chuck Abramski) and other relatives could tell, my dad really enjoyed being at the game,” Marian Abramski Fiscus wrote in an e-mail. “He knew he was watching his grandson play New Castle, and the fact that he most likely doesn’t remember that he was at the game doesn’t really matter. He got to enjoy the moment.”

Razzano expected to play for ’Canes on Friday

Written: Sep 03, 2008 at 7:47 AM
New Castle coach Frank Bongivengo Jr. expects to have senior Michael Razzano back on the field against Indiana on Friday night. The ’Canes’ starting tight end/linebacker was held out of New Castle’s 28-21 loss to Butler with a sore knee. Razzano, who did not dress but was on the sideline during Friday’s game, was a noticeable loss to the ’Canes’ defensive unit. “He’s a good ballplayer on both sides of the ball,” Bongivengo said. “Not having a kid like that always hurts.”

Backfield addition to help Union

Written: Sep 03, 2008 at 7:46 AM
Union High, which started preseason training camp with just 22 players, is now up to 25.
