ALBION — The Wilmington High football team got back on track just in time for the District 10 playoffs.
The Greyhounds used strong defense to stop a two-game losing streak en route to a 22-13 nonregion victory over Northwestern last night.
Wilmington, which opened the season 4-0, concludes the regular season at 6-4. The Greyhounds, the four-time defending District 10, Class AA champions, will learn their first-round opponent later today.
The District 10, Class AA playoff games are slated for Nov. 13.
Sutton Whiting put Wilmington on the board first with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Harrison Sturm converted the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
The Wildcats (3-7) tied it at 7 in the second quarter on an Aaron Maskery 1-yard plunge and a conversion boot from Ricky Kantola.
However, Wilmington took the lead for good later in the stanza. Jake Devido raced 80 yards for a score. The conversion kick failed and it remained 13-7.
The Greyhounds collected a safety when Northwestern sent a snap sailing over the punter’s head and through the end zone for a 15-7 halftime buffer.
Gunnar Donati put the game away when he hauled in a 26-yard scoring strike from quarterback Nick Vasko in the third period for a 22-7 edge.
Wilmington managed six first downs and 227 yards of total offense. But the defense limited the Wildcats to 175 yards to earn the win.
Devido paced the Greyhounds with a season-high 94 yards rushing on nine attempts.
